Nana is by Manuel de Falla
Chronology
The buried memories of the Spanish Civil War are revealed when a woman searches for the remains of her grandfather and discovers the story of an idealistic young teacher in Tarragona. I was lucky enough to find this film on a Singapore Airlines flight!
He goes against a local priest, a deceased dictator, and faces the dictatorial government and Franco’s army before the Spanish Civil War
It tells the story of a beautiful progressive teacher who is a follower of the little-known and somewhat revolutionary “Fraynet Method” who tries it out in a small rural school in the Spanish countryside. Bad times!
It was deeply moving to me and a wonderful testament to the humanity and spirit of this teacher
He is beaten, paraded almost to death in front of his young students, then killed, and his body is dumped in a pile, and thus never found. The film retraces his story through the efforts of one of his students’ great-granddaughters to find her grandfather’s burial in a mass grave.
Unfortunately, the book “The True Story” on which it is based does not yet appear to be available in English
It deserves more attention and viewing, at least on the arthouse circuit in the UK, Europe and where I live in Australia.
